The Super Mario Effect - Tricking Your Brain into Learning More | Mark Rober | TEDxPenn

When 50,000 of Mark Robers 3 million YouTube subscribers participated in a basic coding challenge, the data all pointed to what Rober has dubbed the Super Mario Effect. The YouTube star and former NASA engineer describes how this data-backed mindset for life gamification has stuck with him along his journey, and how it impacts the ways he helps (or tricks) his viewers into learning science, engineering, and design. Mark Rober has made a career out of engineering, entertainment, and education. After completing degrees in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University and the University of Southern California, Rober joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2004. In his nine years as a NASA engineer, seven of which were on the Mars rover Curiosity team, Rober worked on both the Descent Stage (the jet pack that lowered the Rover to the surface) and some hardware on the Rover top deck for collecting samples. In 2011, Rober’s iPad-based Halloween costume helped launch both his creative costume company, Digital Dudz, and his YouTube channel, which now boasts 3 million subscribers and 400 million views. His videos focus on creative ideas and science- and engineering-based pranks and activities. Rober is a regular guest on «Jimmy Kimmel Live!». Today, he does research and development work for a large technology company in Northern California, where he lives with his wife and son. — About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

Diabetes

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Recent discoveries (many in my lab) on the links between type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease; translation of that lab work into real-life advice and consequences.

My work examines the role of metabolic processes in regulating brain function, and specifically in regulating memory processing. We use a variety of animal models to examine the behavioral and neurochemical impact of modulations including diet-induced insulin resistance, beta-amyloid, insulin, and recurrent hypoglycemia.

Key discoveries have included:

Drainage of glucose from the brain extracellular fluid at times of high cognitive demand, showing that glucose demand can exceed supply and be limiting for cognitive performance.

Altered brain glucose transport and diffusion in the aged brain.

A key role for insulin in hippocampal cognitive and metabolic processes; conversely, the impact of insulin resistance on hippocampal function.

The cognitive, metabolic and neural impact of recurrent hypoglycemia (RH), a key side-effect of insulin therapy that limits achievement of target blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Recently, the mechanistic links between RH and subsequent weight gain.

Mechanistic links between beta-amyloid and both (i) hippocampal metabolism and (ii) central insulin signalling.

A central role for GluT4 in hippocampal cognitive processes.

To date I have roughly 50 peer-reviewed journal papers with ~2500 citations, at an h-index of 26; my work has been funded by the NIH, ADA, JDRF, Alzheimer’s Association and several state and private grants. In addition, my lab has won awards for excellence in student research every year during my time at U.Albany, and I have several teaching and mentoring awards.

From a patient or layperson’s point of view, my work shows that lifestyle elements – such as lack of exercise, caffeine intake, drinking red wine, or overeating – have direct and measureable impact on brain function, diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, and risk of death. We can make specific recommendations for change, and show at the molecular level how choices made every day about diet – and even about things like doing a crossword instead of watching TV – affect your brain’s function.

The Transformative Power of Walking | Sandra James | TEDxCarsonCity

Vancouver BC City Planner, Sandra James gives examples of how making a community more walkable, can change the social fabric of a neighborhood or a community.

Sandy James is irrationally passionate about sustainably smart walkable communities. As a city planner for the City of Vancouver Sandy championed locally scaled neighborhood projects that virally became city policy in Vancouver and other cities. Working collaboratively with engineering staff Sandy developed the innovative 140 kilometer “green street” sustainable network of connected parks, streets and places where pedestrians have priority. Known as the “pickpocket of city hall” for her ability to find financing, Sandy was named Neighborhood Planner of the Year” by the Vancouver Sun newspaper for her work with communities. Sandy believes that promoting walkability is socially and morally the right thing to do, and chaired the international Walk 21 Conference in Vancouver in 2011. Sandy is a Director of Walk Metro Vancouver, which encourages best practices for the development of walkable places and spaces, creating communities we want to live in.

If you have a dream...never give up!: Mark Colbourne at TEDxKingsCollegeLondon

Mark Colbourne MBE is Great Britains newest Gold medal Paralympian in the sport of cycling. He has gone through hell and back to reach his first Paralympic Games at London 2012 after he broke his back in a near fatal paragliding accident in May 2009. Even though he was left with lower leg paralysis and drop foot in both feet, he fought for 12 months to learn to walk again with walking aids and now prides himself as a full time professional Para-cyclist for his country.

Mark talks about the highs and lows of having a life changing experience and competing on the international stage at the London 2012 Paralympics. In a world where the smallest margins are the difference between winning and losing or living and dying, this man can explain what it takes to not only push our body and mind to their limits in order to achieve your dreams against all odds but also to enjoy to the max life while you can! His motivating style and epic life story uplifts every audience and with his humble approach to life he never fails to leave anyone inspired.
