Professor Daniel Ashlock has a doctorate in pure mathematics from Caltech. He has been a math professor for 23 years and taught twelve different types first year math courses at four institutions for majors in math, hard sciences, general education, biology, and business. He has developed five different first year courses. He currently holds a chair in bioinformatics with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics where he is a Full Professor of Mathematics. He has prizes for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as for research. He has over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications in mathematics, computer science, theoretical biology, computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, game theory, and automatic content generation for games. He is a senior member of the IEEE and serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, the IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in Games, and Biosystems.

Действие романов происходит в мире будущего. Человечество открыло способ межзвёздных путешествий в гиперпространстве, после чего приступило к активной колонизации космоса и столкнулось с чужими (инопланетными расами). Началась Смутная война между населяющими Галактику цивилизациями, в которой победили люди. Все человеческие миры были объединены в единую Империю, которую возглавил император Грей. Раса саккра была полностью уничтожена, а с остальными человечество заключило мир. Люди вошли в Тройственный Альянс с расами булрати (существа, внешне похожие на медведей и обладающие огромной физической силой) и меклонцев (раса киборгов). Булрати и меклонцы получили право жить на людских планетах и служить в людской армии и Службе Имперской Безопасности (СИБ). Главной религиозной организацией в Империи стала церковь Единой Воли, которую возглавляет патриарх. Кроме неё, среди религиозных направлений упоминаются православие и секта механистов, которые стремятся к замене частей своего тела механическими имплантатами.

Ко времени действия романа Империя охватывает множество планет, каждая из которых имеет свои законы, обычаи и традиции, но признаёт власть Императора, который, в свою очередь, стремится учитывать интересы планет. Столица Империи расположена на Терре (бывшая Земля).
