Лоснится рассыпчатый кус-кус, прыгающий из котла по бумажным кулечкам. Мухи жадно кружат над пахлавой и рахат-лукумом, посетители уличных кафе неторопливо запивают пылающий черный напиток водой со льдом. Самый обычный день в одной из азиатских стран. Вот только действие происходит в самом сердце Европы – на Елисейских Полях.
Начатая в Париже под впечатлением от неевропейского вида толпы на Елисейских Полях, книга была опубликована в 2005 году, вызвала огромный общественный резонанс, была переведена на несколько европейских языков и удостоена премии Басткон. Сегодня, спустя одиннадцать лет с момента первой публикации, в свете трагических событий происходящих практически во всех крупных европейских городах, история, описываемая в романе, к большому сожалению, становится все более и более реалистичной.
Друзья-поэты, восторженные женщины, любовь всей жизни Марина Басманова, две психушки, допросы в КГБ, народный суд, тюрьма, ссылка, принуждение к эмиграции. Все это Ленинград Бродского. Биография, которую, по выражению Ахматовой, делали «нашему рыжему».
Автор фильма Николай Картозия: «Это история о человеке, который навязал миру свою конституцию. О ленинградском мальчике, который хотел стать мировым поэтом — и стал.
Америка и Россия, конечно, главные страны Бродского. Но только в его любимой Италии вдруг понимаешь, что Иосиф Александрович, наш современник, откликавшийся на мобильный, на самом деле жил будто бы до нашей эры и дошел к нам в переводах с латыни. То есть стал классиком при жизни».
Автор фильма Антон Желнов: «Наша главная цель — показать западное становление Бродского. Его превращение из советского эмигранта в писателя и общественную фигуру с мировым именем. Поэт Чеслав Милош как-то сравнил Бродского с гигантским зданием барочной архитектуры. Мы просто попытались получше разглядеть его».
Россия, Америка, Италия, Швеция, Финляндия — авторы фильма следуют за своим героем, самым путешествующим из всех русских писателей. Места, ставшие его биографией. И люди, определившие судьбу.

Мы знаем Бродского-поэта, но не знаем Бродского-преподавателя. Он читал лекции и вел семинары в Мичиганском и Колумбийском университетах, служил в женском колледже Маунт-Холиок. Чему учил своих студентов профессор, куривший на лекциях? Впервые его ученики соберутся в одной аудитории:
«У него было кое-что, чего нет у американцев. Он воспринимал жизнь трагически, и это накладывало отпечаток на все, что бы он ни делал. В этом ключе он вел лекции», — Виджей Сешарди, студент Бродского, лауреат Пулитцеровской премии.
