How the COVID pandemic can create security for the next crisis | Dr. Angela Dunn | TEDxSaltLakeCity

The thing about a pandemic due a novel virus — there is no vaccine and there is no treatment. No one in the world has immunity and everyone in the world is susceptible. At first, the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to be an infectious equalizer, but as it spread through communities, it only made existing health and economic disparities even worse.

As the Utah State Epidemiologist, Dr. Angela Dunn has been at the forefront of managing the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the state. In this serious, yet heart-felt talk, Dr. Dunn shares how we are all interconnected and when one community suffers, we are all more vulnerable. She provides real and achievable standards so all those in our communities can not just live, but thrive in times of normalcy and in times of crisis.

This presentation was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, with only a limited live audience of cast and crew members. While applause has been added to the beginning and end of the video, all other aspects have intentionally remained as filmed to honor the struggle and loss experienced globally during 2020.

Wardrobe furnished by Tommaso Cardullo. Dr. Angela Dunn is currently the State Epidemiologist for the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) where she works across the department to identify and address health concerns of Utahns. She came to UDOH as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As an EIS Officer, she has responded to communicable disease outbreaks both in Utah and abroad, including the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. Dr. Dunn is boarded in General Preventive and Public health, and completed her residency training at the University of California, San Diego.

Prior to joining the CDC, Dr. Dunn worked as a primary care and public health physician in San Diego, focusing on women’s health, sexually transmitted diseases, refugee health, and tuberculosis. Dr. Dunn also engaged in health systems research and interventions aimed at improving health care delivery within the military health system and federally-qualified health care clinics. If we want a better world, we’ve got to kill diet culture. | Susan Hyatt | TEDxFargo

Every year, billions of women continue a never-ending quest to lose weight and achieve the “perfect” physique. But this quest is a trap—one that keeps women sick, stressed, distracted, and depleted. To create a generation of healthy, strong women who are focused not on their body size but on solving real world problems, we must dismantle the harmful weight loss industry and the body-obsessed “diet culture” that this industry has spawned. Susan Hyatt is a master certified life and business coach who has helped thousands of women to transform their bodies and lives. Susan is the author of two books, Create Your Own Luck and BARE. Her work has been featured in places like O: The Oprah Magazine, Woman’s World, Cosmopolitan, and The Huffington Post. She’s the creator of The BARE Process, a trademarked system for upgrading your mental and physical health, building more energy and confidence, and creating the life that you want. Diabetes

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Recent discoveries (many in my lab) on the links between type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease; translation of that lab work into real-life advice and consequences.

My work examines the role of metabolic processes in regulating brain function, and specifically in regulating memory processing. We use a variety of animal models to examine the behavioral and neurochemical impact of modulations including diet-induced insulin resistance, beta-amyloid, insulin, and recurrent hypoglycemia.

Key discoveries have included:

Drainage of glucose from the brain extracellular fluid at times of high cognitive demand, showing that glucose demand can exceed supply and be limiting for cognitive performance.

Altered brain glucose transport and diffusion in the aged brain.

A key role for insulin in hippocampal cognitive and metabolic processes; conversely, the impact of insulin resistance on hippocampal function.

The cognitive, metabolic and neural impact of recurrent hypoglycemia (RH), a key side-effect of insulin therapy that limits achievement of target blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Recently, the mechanistic links between RH and subsequent weight gain.

Mechanistic links between beta-amyloid and both (i) hippocampal metabolism and (ii) central insulin signalling.

A central role for GluT4 in hippocampal cognitive processes.

To date I have roughly 50 peer-reviewed journal papers with ~2500 citations, at an h-index of 26; my work has been funded by the NIH, ADA, JDRF, Alzheimer’s Association and several state and private grants. In addition, my lab has won awards for excellence in student research every year during my time at U.Albany, and I have several teaching and mentoring awards.

From a patient or layperson’s point of view, my work shows that lifestyle elements – such as lack of exercise, caffeine intake, drinking red wine, or overeating – have direct and measureable impact on brain function, diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, and risk of death. We can make specific recommendations for change, and show at the molecular level how choices made every day about diet – and even about things like doing a crossword instead of watching TV – affect your brain’s function.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
