This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. «We’re scared of green buildings – we want to do the right thing and make our lives green, but weve lost our connection with Nature,» says green building expert Lindsey Kindrat. «We design conventional buildings to keep Nature out; but green buildings let Nature IN. They reconnect us with our place in the environment, and let us control our living and working spaces.” So why hasnt building green become mainstream? Kindrat explores the idea that what holds us back from building green is neither expense nor ignorance, but a deeper fear of our disconnect with the natural world around us.

Lindsey Kindrat is a born naturalist, explorer and small town girl at heart, with roots in Alberta oil country and a vast appreciation for the potential of her beloved planet. Combining her passion for ecology and physics into sustainable building planning, design and construction for government and public sector projects, Lindsey quickly earned a place among Alberta’s top green building professionals. She has twice been awarded a Directorship with the Alberta Chapter, Canada Green Building Council, where she seeks to bring green building education into the mainstream for everyone to share, understand and enjoy.

Thomas Woltz is the principal and owner of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) with offices in New York City, Charlottesville VA, and San Francisco CA. During the past 19 years of practice, Woltz and his staff have forged a body of work that integrates the beauty and function of built form and craftsmanship with an understanding of complex biological systems and restoration ecology yielding hundreds of acres of reconstructed wetlands, reforested land, native meadows, and flourishing wildlife habitat. Currently NBW is entrusted with the design of 8 major public parks across the US, Canada and New Zealand. The firm’s work has been recognized with over 80 national and international awards and published widely.

In 2011, Thomas Woltz was invested into the American Society of Landscape Architects Council of Fellows, among the highest honors achieved in the profession, and in 2013, named Design Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal Magazine.

Koen Olthuis studied Architecture and Industrial Design at the Delft University of Technology. In his vision todays designers are an essential part of the climate change generation and should start to enhance their perspective on urban components to become dynamic instead of static. In this illuminating talk, high school mathematics teacher and YouTube star Eddie Woo shares his passion for mathematics, declaring that «mathematics is a sense, just like sight and touch» and one we can all embrace. Using surprising examples of geometry, he encourages everyone to seek out the patterns around us, for «a whole new way to see the world». A public high school teacher for more than 10 years, Eddie Woo gained international attention when he posted videos of his classroom lessons online, to assist an ill student. His YouTube channel, WooTube, has more than 200,000 subscribers and over 13 million views.
Eddie believe that mathematics can be embraced and even enjoyed by absolutely everybody. He was named Australias Local Hero and was a Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize for his love of teaching mathematics. Professor Daniel Ashlock has a doctorate in pure mathematics from Caltech. He has been a math professor for 23 years and taught twelve different types first year math courses at four institutions for majors in math, hard sciences, general education, biology, and business. He has developed five different first year courses. He currently holds a chair in bioinformatics with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics where he is a Full Professor of Mathematics. He has prizes for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as for research. He has over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications in mathematics, computer science, theoretical biology, computational intelligence, artificial intelligence, game theory, and automatic content generation for games. He is a senior member of the IEEE and serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, the IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in Games, and Biosystems.
