Genius, Mental Illness and Everything in Between: Dr. Lamont Tang at TEDxHongKongED

To what extent is genius and mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia related? To what extent do genetics and environment influence genius and mental illness? Do we as a society overestimate and overemphasize the value of intelligence? This talk explores the age-old notion that «genius» and «madness» are related. With the explosion of scientific knowledge on the brain in the last decade, this talk explores the extent to which we currently understand the biological basis of creativity, intelligence, and mental illness.

Dr. Lamont Tang graduated from Stanford University and received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Brandeis University while training under Professor Eve Marder, past President of the Society of Neuroscience. He then continued his post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco with Graeme Davis. Lamont has published in top neuroscience and biology journals and his research interests include genetics, genomics, physiology, and theoretical neuroscience. Outside of academia, Lamont is an accomplished musician, having studied under Carol Sindell and Dorothy Delay--one of the worlds most renowned violin teachers. Lamont has performed as a soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Oregon Symphony and has also performed in masterclasses with musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukeman, Cho-Liang Lin and Glen Dicterow.

Why is India so filthy? | The Ugly Indian | TEDxBangalore

Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: bit.ly/1FAg8hB

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Ugly Indian is an anonymous collective that does not talk to media, wants no publicity and works with the motto — Only Work No Talk. However, they made an exception for TEDxBangalore so that they could open up the question of why we as Indians are okay with filthy public spaces? The tragedy of the commons — can we change it to the victory of the commons?

Theres a silent revolution brewing in India, and its called The Ugly Indian. It is anonymous, faceless and leaderless, and has seen thousands of citizens coming out to fix local civic problems following a simple motto: Kaam Chalu Mooh Bandh. Only Work No Talk. What started off as a series of social experiments in Bangalore in 2011, to see what it takes to change everyday ugly Indian behaviour in public spaces (littering, spitting paan, public urination and more), has now transformed into a nation-wide movement that is spreading virally – both on social media, and on the ground. The centrepiece of the TUI approach is the spotfix where ugly spots are fixed by citizens. There is no activism, no sloganeering, no lecturing, no finger-pointing and no ideological debates – just a sincere attempt to solve problems by focusing on a spot — using ones own time, hands and money.
