Have You Ever Met a Monster? | Amy Herdy | TEDxSanJuanIsland

Messaging around sexual assault prevention is largely aimed at women and cloaked in helpful advice: dont walk alone, dont get drunk, dont put yourself at risk. Essentially, dont get raped.

What if we turn this attention to a different population and say, dont rape? What are we doing wrong as a culture that we continue to produce rapists?

Through poignant storytelling, award-winning author and investigative producer Amy Herdy explores the cycle of sexual abuse and examines the dangers of dismissing our most violent predators as monsters.

For more than twenty years, journalist and author Amy Herdy has specialized in trauma reporting, particularly sexual assault.

Ms. Herdy’s professional engagements include teaching workshops on investigative reporting and trauma journalism for the U.S. State Department in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Her awards include an Emmy; Society of Professional Journalists awards; a Radio, Television News Directors Association award; an Associated Press award; two American Society of Newspaper Editors awards and a Military Reporters

Green buildings are more than brick and mortar | Bryn Davidson | TEDxRenfrewCollingwood

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Creating greener buildings will help address climate change… right?

Green buildings can make a difference, but only if we start asking the right questions. If we can start to see the whole story of how our buildings impact the climate then we can start to make strides toward real net-positive change. The technology isnt new, the strategies arent rocket science — the hard step is shifting our thinking about what it means to build green.

Bryn Davidson wears many hats. Sure, he’s a LEED-accredited building designer, sustainability consultant and small business owner with degrees in Architecture (UBC) and Mechanical Engineering (UC Berkeley). But he doesn’t stop there. He’s also one of the co-founders of Lanefab Design / Build; a Vancouver-based design and construction company that built the city’s first laneway house in 2010. Since then, Lanefab has continued its specialization in energy efficient green homes and infill ‘laneway houses’ by completing over 40 of the small infill homes. Bryn Davidson has been on the leading edge of the laneway house industry, and we don’t see him slowing down anytime soon.

Genius, Mental Illness and Everything in Between: Dr. Lamont Tang at TEDxHongKongED

To what extent is genius and mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia related? To what extent do genetics and environment influence genius and mental illness? Do we as a society overestimate and overemphasize the value of intelligence? This talk explores the age-old notion that «genius» and «madness» are related. With the explosion of scientific knowledge on the brain in the last decade, this talk explores the extent to which we currently understand the biological basis of creativity, intelligence, and mental illness.

Dr. Lamont Tang graduated from Stanford University and received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Brandeis University while training under Professor Eve Marder, past President of the Society of Neuroscience. He then continued his post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco with Graeme Davis. Lamont has published in top neuroscience and biology journals and his research interests include genetics, genomics, physiology, and theoretical neuroscience. Outside of academia, Lamont is an accomplished musician, having studied under Carol Sindell and Dorothy Delay--one of the worlds most renowned violin teachers. Lamont has performed as a soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Oregon Symphony and has also performed in masterclasses with musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukeman, Cho-Liang Lin and Glen Dicterow.
