How to cope with anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxUHasselt

Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders.

Are we afraid of green buildings? | Lindsey Kindrat | TEDxYYC

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. «We’re scared of green buildings – we want to do the right thing and make our lives green, but weve lost our connection with Nature,» says green building expert Lindsey Kindrat. «We design conventional buildings to keep Nature out; but green buildings let Nature IN. They reconnect us with our place in the environment, and let us control our living and working spaces.” So why hasnt building green become mainstream? Kindrat explores the idea that what holds us back from building green is neither expense nor ignorance, but a deeper fear of our disconnect with the natural world around us.

Lindsey Kindrat is a born naturalist, explorer and small town girl at heart, with roots in Alberta oil country and a vast appreciation for the potential of her beloved planet. Combining her passion for ecology and physics into sustainable building planning, design and construction for government and public sector projects, Lindsey quickly earned a place among Alberta’s top green building professionals. She has twice been awarded a Directorship with the Alberta Chapter, Canada Green Building Council, where she seeks to bring green building education into the mainstream for everyone to share, understand and enjoy.

An End to Procrastination | Archana Murthy | TEDxMarcusHighSchool

Humans are all united by a force greater than joy, sorrow, and love… procrastination. Contrary to the humorous picture our popular culture paints, avoidance of work is a serious issue. Surveys suggest that 85-95% of students encounter problems directly related to procrastination. As a teenager, all-too-familiar with this torrid cycle of stress, anxiety, and depression, Archana Murthy presents an insightful cure to one of society’s greatest ills. Through personal reflection, Archana suggests that the cure to procrastination is a springboard for a greater journey that is better navigated with others.

Archana Murthy is a student of Marcus High School but also of life. She learns Indian classical music and dance but loves any and all art. She believes that art, science, and spirituality are often interchangeable. This is her first TEDx talk.

Enter the cult of extreme productivity | Mark Adams | TEDxHSG

In this talk Mark shares a dramatic and powerful system that takes productivity thinking to whole new and terrifying level, allowing a person to achieve almost any goal they set themselves with rapid speed. The secret to this type of exponential success? Bin your ‘affirmations’ and ‘goals’ and instead embrace fear as your friend by making irreversible decisions. Instead of hapless resolutions members of the «Lock-In» cult contract with themselves in a way that they cannot escape from (without suffering brutal consequences). The “Lock-In" system harnesses our most primal evolutionary instinct — to avoid pain — and uses it to radically supercharge our lives. Many of the most successful people in history have used its phenomenal power to create extraordinary success. Think youre hardcore enough? Then enter the Cult of Extreme Productivity Mark Adams is Vice President and Head of Innovation at VICE, which has come from humble beginnings as a print magazine to digitally transform into a 5 billion dollar youth media empire. In this talk, Mark describes the cult of extreme productivity that he became part of alongside his brother. The cult is all about making irreversible decisions that make “manifesting” your dreams the only option because not achieving it would create indescribable suffering. This is the second time Mark has done a TEDx talk. The first time his talk was banned. The age of genetic wonder | Juan Enriquez | TEDxCERN

Gene editing tools make it possible for us to manipulate the code of life. If we slightly modify the DNA of an orange we can obtain a tangerine. The old biology was used to observe stuff, the new biology can make it, it can redesign species. But what happens when we do it with human DNA? What happens when we decide to program cells? Renowned TED speaker Juan Enriquez gives us an outlook on the future of humankind in the post DNA-editing era and he explains the impact of new life-sciences on politics, business, technology, and society. Juan Enriquez is a life scientist, author, and futurist. He is the co-author of the book “Evolving ourselves: How Unnatural Selection and Nonrandom Mutation Are Shaping Life on Earth”. He is also the managing director of Excel Venture Management, a life sciences VC firm.
